The Decemberists - the legionnaire's lament, 2002

"The song takes place in a desert setting. Since the legionnaire is himself French (a sizable minority of legionnaires were not actually "foreign"), this desert is unlikely to be in Algeria, as that was considered part of France. It is probably intentionally vague."
