Belle And Sebastian - big john shaft, 2002

"Though some of the other songs, such as "I Don't Want to Play Football," are disappointingly short, more substantial songs like "Big John Shaft," the surprisingly upbeat "Scooby Driver," and the bouncy title track make the album worthwhile for die-hard Belle & Sebastian fans. The only real misstep is the inclusion of so much dialogue from the film -- it didn't work that well in the movie, and in this context it's especially distracting. In all, Storytelling is a frustrating release from Belle & Sebastian; it's not exactly a complete album, it's not as satisfying as their best EPs, and yet it displays enough of the group's charm that it's difficult to dismiss entirely."

"The writing and recording of the album was a reaction to the protracted sessions of its predecessor Raise the Pressure, which had taken a year and a half to complete. Johnny Marr and Bernard Sumner remained the only official members of the band, but were joined by Doves frontman Jimi Goodwin on bass and Black Grape drummer Ged Lynch. The sound of the album reflected this back-to-basics approach in terms of the line-up, although subsequent production and mixing incorporated additional beats and samples. Twisted Tenderness was co-produced by influential New York City club DJ and dance producer Arthur Baker, with whom Sumner had previously worked on New Order's 1983 hit "Confusion", amongst other songs."

The Radio Dept - pet grief, 2006

"Fill up it does, with the heavy, industrial, almost tribal-like percussion that gives way to title track “Pet Grief.” The synthesizer carries the instrumental, while beautiful piano and acoustic guitar enter to round out the sound. The dreamy, listless, accented vocals are trademark Radio Dept., as Johan Duncanson lets you in on his inner monologue, his urge to be there for his friend who’s just been dumped clashing with his unspoken love for them. He holds back, “I’ll shut my mouth for you,” but he knows how feckless he comes across, “what can I say, what can I do for me to analyze you?” It’s a situation that has no optimal outcome (“It is a double bind, I can’t win this one“), but he chooses the passive option here to keep from pushing them away."

"What I learned in this listening experiment surprised me. All the elements I thought the Radio Dept. grew into over time were more or less present from the start. Or, maybe more accurately, the band has only stretched by skips and steps, not leaps and bounds, over the years. Being one of my favorite bands, that's only a mild knock against them. Much like the Kings of Convenience, who also only manage to release a new full-length every three or four years, their output is so sporadic that by the time something new comes along I'm more than fine with it being a minor variation on whatever they've done before."
