Paul McCartney - maybe i’m amazed, 1970

"McCartney wrote the song in 1969, just before the break-up of the Beatles. He credited his wife Linda with helping him get through the difficult time. Although most of his debut solo album was recorded at his home in London, McCartney recorded "Maybe I'm Amazed" entirely in EMI's Number Two studio in Abbey Road, on 15 February 1970."

Radiohead - house of cards, 2007

"It was a strange experience, sitting in front of a laser in the dark, then emailing back and forth with James the director as he sat in front of computers for a whole month with the amazing technicians who processed the data ... But it says something about the song and came out better than I had dared hope."

Au Revoir Simone - through the backyards, 2005

"Beyond the stimulating use of the drum machine Au Revoir Simone’s electronic dream pop still remains of a comforting nature."

The Beatles - yellow submarine, 1966

"The Beatles recorded "Yellow Submarine" during a period characterised by experimentation in the recording studio. After taping the basic track and vocals in late May 1966, they held a session to overdub nautical sound effects, party ambience and chorus singing, recalling producer George Martin's previous work with members of the Goons. As a novelty song coupled with "Eleanor Rigby", a track devoid of any rock instrumentation, the single marked a radical departure for the group."

Pet Shop Boys - being boring two thousand and twenty-four version, 2024

"it’s with the last of the three verses that “Being Boring” really makes its magic felt, as the tone shifts from one of gentle reminiscence to become a lament for friends lost: “All the people I was kissing/ Some are here and some are missing/ In the nineteen-nineties”. That verse takes on extra poignancy with the knowledge that Tennant had recently lost a close friend to AIDS, but despite that the song retains an air of positivity: more a celebration of life than a mourning of death. The title itself comes from the novelist F Scott Fitzgerald’s wife Zelda, herself an author, who wrote: “She refused to be bored chiefly because she wasn’t boring.”

Pink Floyd - another brick in the wall part two, 1979

"Waters' attack on teachers who practice "dark sarcasm in the classroom" was inspired by his own schoolmasters. "The school I was at — they were really like that," Waters said. "[All] they had to offer was their own bitterness and cynicism."

Castlebeat - awake, 2026

"Opening track ‘Awake’ beckons you into the CASTLEBEAT world, and feels like driving in cars with the windows down across a sun-soaked Californian landscape. Tracking through moments of past loves, growth, and a life well-lived, ‘Promise’ closes the record–feeling like cruising under the nighttime city lights of London."
