Belle And Sebastian - it only takes one lion, 2026

"The lyrics came to Stuart Murdoch in the hazy aftermath of Scotland’s dramatic qualification for the World Cup. The Belle and Sebastian frontman had watched his side’s playoff victory over Denmark through his fingers before deciding to write his own anthem to a team he has followed for more than 50 years. “Most people recognised instantly the next day that they’d witnessed the most important Scottish game ever,” says Murdoch. “That was our magic moment.”

Pink Floyd - goodbye cruel world, 1979

"With his final “goodbye,” Pink places his last brick, abruptly cutting off the music and his farewell, as if we’re stationed on the outside of his wall along with the rest of the “cruel world.” On an album where nearly every song segues into the next via an instrumental or sound effects interlude, the silence that cuts into the end of the album’s first half is instantly jarring, the immensity of Pink’s wall felt in the void where only seconds before a musical life existed. Figuratively speaking, the wall silences all."

The Innocence Mission - this boat, 2020

“This Boat” is lovely as ever, with limpid guitar, luminous piano and strings enveloping Karen Peris’ earnest, trembling vocals. The song seems to explore the strangeness of how time unfolds, historically and personally: Boats giving way to planes; the sunrise that begins each day. “Things that we started out here to say / went down the street and turned into a day,” Peris sings, musing on time’s constant forward motion, and its debt to what came before."

Ingraban - the one i love rem cover, 2026

"A long time ago, I played in a band covering this song (and many others). Of course, at some point I wanted to do my own cover version. In case, one of the old band members checks in here: "Hello!"

Acid House Kings - heaven's just a kiss away, 1997

"The Creation Records boss Alan McGee had a band called Biff Bang Pow! released an album called The Acid House Album. We thought that was funny, so we decided to call ourselves Acid House Kings. In retrospect, maybe not a brilliant choice. Or maybe it was?"
